沖縄の島々で、人間とジュゴンのさまざまな関係について調べているときに、この本と出会った。沖縄のジュゴンが置かれている危機的な状況について著者と話した後、私はこの本を英訳することに決めた。現在、ジュゴンは地域的に絶滅の危機に瀕している。唯一の理由ではないが、本書で描かれている沖縄戦とそれに伴う飢餓が、このような事態を招いた重要な要因である。辺野古の基地建設など、現在のインフラ開発プロジェクトも、沖縄のジュゴンの生息地に影響を与えている。このような本は、戦争や沿岸部の開発が、他の生物、つまり自分の言葉で語ることができず、人間がめったに出会うことのない生物にとってどのような意味を持つのか、私たちに目を開かせることができると思う。

I encountered this book while doing research on the various relations humans and dugongs hold with one another in the Okinawan islands. I decided to translate it into English after talking to the author about the critical state the Okinawan dugongs find themselves in. Today they stand on the verge of regional extinction. Although not being the only reason, the Battle of Okinawa, depicted in this book and the resulting hunger were important contributing factor to this development. Current infrastructural development projects such as the base construction in Henoko, also affect the habitat of the Okinawan dugongs. I think that books like this one can open our eyes to what war and coastal development might mean for other beings, those beings that cannot speak for themselves and are seldomly encountered by humans.
