２０世紀後半、日本では、家族の変化、コミュニティの崩壊とともに、少字化、高齢化など大きな社会変容が見られた。日本から遅れてではあるが、韓国や中国でも類似の現象が見られる。異なる伝統文化や政治体制をもった国々の間でも、なぜ、類似の現象が見られるのか。他方、仔細に見ると、ワーキングマザーの増加や対人関係の変化など、表層的な現象は同じであっても、その内実は異なるように見える。なぜ、異なるのか。本書は、東京・ソウル・上海に焦点を当て、２０世紀後半から２１世紀にかけて三都市が経験した社会変動やそのあり方を見極め、かつ、なぜそのような変化が起きたのかを論じる。
