Regarding the Publication of Recent Cultural Heritage Issues in Afghanistan
In March 2001, the world was stunned by the shocking news of the destruction of the two Giant Buddhas at Bamiyan under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. As an urgent measure, Bamiyan was hastly inscribed on the World Heritage List and on the World Heritage List in Danger, and safeguarding projects for the site are currently being conducted by several international institutions under the coordination of UNESCO.

Since 2003, the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (NRICP) has been carrying out research and a conservation project on archaeological sites and cultural landscapes in Afghanistan, including Bamiyan. For the purpose of making the results widely available to the public, we plan to publish these as a series of documents entitled “Recent Cultural Heritage Issues in Afghanistan”.

This third volume will introduce the results of the scientific study of the Buddhist mural paintings in Bamiyan, titled as “Study of Afghanistan’s Displaced Cultural Properties: Materials and Techniques of the Bamiyan Mural Paintings”.

It would indeed, give us great pleasure if this series brought to your attention our undertakings and the international co-operation focused on the preservation of the cultural heritage in Afghanistan. In our hopes for the future rehabilitation of Afghanistan, we appreciate your understanding and continued support for our activities for the preservation of cultural heritage.
