紹介

ヴィクトリア朝研究は文学、思想、歴史、経済、科学など他領域間での複合研究がさまざまなテーマで始まっていますが、2014年より刊行が始まる新シリーズ『ヴィクトリアン・コンセプツ』は、今日特に関心を集めるトピック毎に、同時代の雑誌記事やパンフレットを中心に資料を編集する一次文献集です。書籍、論文集などからの抜粋も加え、可能な限り復刻にて収録し詳細な解説および索引を付します。英国の文献だけでなく、米国や英国植民地での関連出版物も対象とし、該当のテーマ研究や教育には必要不可欠なシリーズとして継続出版する予定です。

第1回は、スピリチュアリズムの文献集です。近代科学や進化論の普及する19世紀英国の社会の一方で広がった、魂の不死を信じそれを証明しようとするこの主義・思潮は、宗教家、思想家だけでなく作家、文学者から精神医学者、心理学者など科学者をも巻き込んでゆきました。20世紀にいたるまで社会の様々な側面に影響を与え続けたスピリチュアリズムは、英国文化研究の大きな主題の一つで、これまでにも資料集はいくつか編集されています。それら資料集の大部分がスピリチュアリズムに「関する」資料集であるのに対し、今回のコレクションは19世紀~20世紀初頭のスピリチュアリズムの実践家やその信奉者の著述をより収録し、直接的なヴィクトリア朝スピリチュアリズムへのアプローチを可能にするものです。また、近代社会の進む19世紀のなかで発生したスピリチュアリズムの位置をより明確にするため、100点近い同時代の文献を「人間(人種と優生学)」、「文学」、「科学・技術」という3つの分野に大別し3巻に収録、さらにこの時代の反スピリチュアリストによる文献を1巻にまとめ加えます。いままで著作集や単行本のなかに収録されることのなかったコナン・ドイルの著述を始め、アメリカのスピリチュアリスト、アンドリュー・ジャクソン・デイヴィスやハーマン・メルヴィル、ニューオーリンズのアフリカ系アメリカ人スピリチュラリスト達の大変珍しい資料など米国側の文献も充実しています。

各巻に編者の解説が書き下ろされ、最終巻末には索引を備えます。
