1893年のシカゴ万博時に開催された「世界慈善・矯正・博愛会議」の一部として6日間に亘り繰り広げられた病院・看護に関する初の国際会議の記録集です。フロレンス・ナイチンゲールも講演を行ったこの会議には、リンダ・リチャーズやイザベル・ハンプトンなどアメリカの看護近代化の中心人物だけでなく、世界各地から参加した看護の実践家がそれぞれの地域の実状を報告、その中には横浜の米国海軍病院やキリスト教宣教師による看護教育に関する発表なども含まれます。また、日本から参加した高木兼寛が、自ら設立したTokyo Charity Hospital [有志共立東京病院（現東京慈恵医大病院）]についての報告も行っています。会議の翌年に刊行された本書には、これら約90件の発表の全記録に病院の図面や写真など約60点が加えられ出版されたものです。アメリカのみならず、世界の近代看護史研究の最重要文献の一つです。

1918年にロックフェラー財団によりニューヨークで開催された、保健教育に関する会議が契機となり組織された保健・看護教育委員会の報告書です。“Founder of Public Health”と称されるC. E. A Winslow (Professor, Yale School of Medicine) を議長としたこの会議には、世界初の看護学教授M. Adelaide Nutting (Professor, Columbia University)など看護教育のリーダーをはじめ、医療従事者、 病院経営者、公衆衛生局の行政官など50名以上が参加、当時のアメリカでの保健教育の諸問題が議論されました。委員会ではさらにメンバーを拡大しこの問題の調査を継続、1920年の第２回の会議では、大学院教育を含む看護教育のあらゆる側面がさらに広く扱われました。本書はこの委員会の２年強の研究調査をまとめた報告書です。今日につながるアメリカでの看護教育の近代化を伝える貴重な史料です。
