前書きなど

The prime objective of this book is to provide the serious instructor with the tools needed become a more effective ESL instructor. The lessons in this book cover all of the English grammar taught in Japanese junior high school. As such, it represents the ideal curriculum for elementary students, as well as an excellent grammar review for 3rd year middle school students.
To be more useful than Japanese-born English grammar teachers, we need to have a solution to the characteristic pronunciation problems of Japanese students. These problems result from the simple fact that English utilizes many sounds that have no equivalent in the Japanese language. Furthermore, this "phonetic barrier" is solidified by older students who tend to replace them with Japanese sounds they already know, instead of learning the new English sounds. This behavoior results in what is called katakana English and should be avoided.
When learning to speak and understand spoken language as a child, we first learn the fundamental sounds of our language and, through reptition, develop our pronunciation skills into subconscious habitual behaviors. Therefore, the sounds a student uses not only affect their intelligibility to the listeners around them, but also represent what the student expects to hear from other speakers which has a tremendous effect on their listening comprehension.
Research has shown that our ability to accurately mimic the sounds of other languages drops sharply as we age. So as students approach the age of 10, it becomes increasingly necessary to stress correct pronunciation. Since there is little to no formal pronunciation training given to children, most people have little conscious understanding of the oral mechanics of pronunciation and cannot explain it.
In the classroom, our value is just one step above that or a tape recorder's if we can't teach the very thing that few Japanese teachers are even capable of themselves : proper English pronunciation. Using color illustrations as well as text explanations, the PV system taught by this book is surpassed by no other system in use today for teaching the correct pronunciation of English.
This book challenges your students with exercises covering three critical elements of language (sounds, words, and grammar) in an activit-based curriculum, so your students will be naturally motivated to participate in the game-like activities.
By following the structured approach in this handbook, your students will build a framework of associative language skills upon a stable foundation of English phonetic ability. (INTRODUCTION)

版元から一言

General consensus among most educational and behavioral researchers has concluded that children, as well as adults, learn foreign languages much quicker through the repetition of fun and meaningful activities than they do by listening to the teacher gab ! So get your act together and start your students on the path to learning English with the great learning activities in this book. Japanese students who improve their pronounciation have better listening comprehension and speaking skills. The method taught in this book clearly shows the instructor which sound will be troublesome to Japanese students and what you can do to improve their accent.
