ドイツから移民したルドルフ・アッカーマン（Rudolf Ackermann，1764－1834）が1796年にロンドンに創立したアッカーマン社は、 The Microcosm of London (3 volumes, 1808?1811), Westminster Abbey (2 volumes, 1812)など彩色版画入りの大型絵入り本や、絵入り雑誌 Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions (1809-1829)で知られる、19世紀の初めの英国を代表する書肆です。なかでもRepository of Artsの編集者で、自身イラストレーターでもあったフレデリック・ショバール（Frederic Shoberl, 1775?1853）の編著で刊行したThe World in Miniature (43 volumes, 1821?6) は、世界各地の地理、文化、風習、服飾などをカラー図版入りで紹介し大成功したシリーズです。文字通り一般読者向けの小型本として製作され、海外に目を向け始めたヴィクトリア期直前の英国近代市民の間で人気を博し、6年間に全43巻が刊行されました。
本集では、このThe World in Miniatureシリーズのなかの、日本（全1巻）、中国（全2巻）、フィリピン、インドネシアなど東南アジア地域（全2巻）、ハワイやニュージーランドを含むミクロネシア・ポリネシア地域（全2巻）の計7巻を100点以上の彩色図版とともに復刻するものです。伝聞や想像をもとに著された18世紀の書物の中にある記述とは異なり、この地域を旅し、滞在した西洋人の旅行記などから「事実」を抽出した編集を試みてはいますが、まだそこには多くの誤解や先入観の入ったアジア像が見出されます。産業革命や交通の近代化とともに世界が小さくなりだしたこの時代を象徴する本書は、英国や西洋に日本やアジアの国々がどのように映っていたのかを視覚的にも認識させてくれる興味深い資料です。

本コレクションは、19世紀初頭に世界各国の情報を一般読者に提供する目的で刊行された43巻シリーズの一部です。編著者ショバールは、幅広い関心の持ち主で、New Monthly Magazine やThe Forget-me-Not などの雑誌の編集に携わるかたわら、A History of the University of Oxford (1814)やA History of the University of Cambridge(1815)のような大学の歴史を辿った本のほか、旅行文学も多数出版しています。雑学も豊富そうなショバールの編んだ本コレクションの日本の巻を開いてみると、まずは何と言っても色鮮やかな図版が目を惹きますが、これがどこかヘンテコな日本人…「外出する貴婦人」は、釣り竿の先に付けた小型テントのようなものを被り、「赤ちゃんを背負う女」は円盤のような髪に10本ほどの簪を水平に指しています。目次には、「幼児殺し」、「自殺」、「地震」などの項目が並び、「蝦夷」も取りあげられています。19世紀末のイザベラ・バードの旅行記と読み比べてみたり、今の歴史の教科書と照らし合わせてみたり、多様な読み方が楽しめるシリーズです。
