“This Collection is an exercise in diversity, offering commentary by authors of differing views and nationalities writing before, during and immediately after the post-war occupation of Japan. The objective is to incorporate significant English-language texts into a readily accessible series that provides insights into a critical era in Japanese, American and Asia-Pacific history. The vast majority of these works are being reprinted for the first time. This is intended to widen the range of sources that students of the region can draw upon as they discover and evaluate a critical period for Japan, the United States and, indeed, the entire international system. The attention to contemporary texts is deliberate and will, it is hoped, prompt readers to appreciate some of the uncertainties and controversies that the occupation provoked in contrast to the self-congratulatory tone set by MacArthur's publicists….” (from the introduction by Roger Buckley)
