20世紀初頭に英米で刊行されたヴィジュアル版日本百科の復刻です。ほぼ全ページに1〜３点の写真を配し、新世紀を迎え近代化の進む日本の歴史、文化、教育、宗教、武道、医療、法律、政治、軍事、外交、金融、産業、貿易、鉱工業、農林漁業、出版、鉄道、労働、主要都市（東京、横浜、名古屋、京都、大阪、神戸、下関、長崎など）、そしてアイヌや満州、台湾、樺太など、この時代の日本を語る主要項目を網羅しており、特に日本への進出をはかる欧米実業家向けに、産業・金融や日本および外資系企業に関する項目は充実。関東大震災や第２次大戦で失われてしまった、銀行や企業の社屋、街並みなどの貴重な写真に加え、政界、実業界で活躍した人物肖像写真などが満載です。北里柴三郎（「日本の医学の進歩」の項目）、竹越與三郎（「日本の未来」の項目）、東北大農科大学長や北海道大学長を歴任した佐藤昌介（「日本の稲作」の項目）、特許局長官をつとめた中松盛雄、明治大学や海軍芸学校で教鞭をとったI. ブライアン、アーネスト・サトウとの共著Handbook of Japanで知られるW. B. メイソン、アイヌ研究のJ. バチェラーなど国内外の専門家が諸項目を執筆（英文）し、商務局や各都市の市長、商工会議所が協力し諸データを提供ました。日本近代史、産業・経営・社会経済史、都市・建築史、比較文化学等広く研究、教育用の資料としてご利用ください。
