レイチェル・カーソンに先駆けて環境問題に警鐘を鳴らしたエレン・リチャーズの初めての英文著作集成です。アメリカで最初の女性職業化学者となった彼女は、水質検査基準を確立したパイオニアであり、同時に学校給食制度や家政学の成立に貢献し、現代の家庭生活や都市生活のあらたな方向を示しました。彼女の多分野における研究・教育活動は、究極的には、人為的環境をコントロールするためのものであり、それを彼女は、優生学に対して「優境学：ユーセニクス」と名付けたのです。　リチャーズに関してはこれまでにも数多くの伝記、研究書が著されてきましたが、彼女自身の著書のほとんどは現在入手できず、その教育思想、生活環境学の真髄に原著からせまることはできませんでした。今回初めてまとめられるこの著作集は、リチャーズの単著のすべてと主要編著、シカゴ万博に彼女が食物科学教育として展示・企画した公共キッチンRumford Kitchenの展示パンフレット、 単行本に収録されなかった重要雑誌論文、NEA（全米教育協会）での講演など、20点以上の文献を初版または決定版の復刻にて集成するものです。環境問題が人々の日常生活と密接に関わるようになり、環境学もより身近で広く研究、教育の対象となるようになった今日、その原点ともいうべきエレン・リチャーズの思想研究は、今後避けて通れないテーマとなると思われます。科学史、教育史、米国史、女性学（フェミニズム思想）等の領域を超えたより広い学際的研究のためにも、本文献集は必読の資料集といえます。編者による日本語解説付きです。
