前書きなど
デスコア (Deathcore) とは、「デスメタルとメタルコアがクロスオーバーする中で誕生し定着したエクストリーム・メタルのサブジャンルのひとつ」というのが一般的な認識である。ただ、「デスメタルとメタルコアの融合」という言葉だけでは表す事が出来ないほど、現在ではそのスタイルは変化してきている。メタルコアの発展に伴って取り入れられきた様々なアイデアが、デスコアという狭きサブジャンルの個性として、バンドサウンドのオリジナリティになっていった。
デスコアという言葉は、1986年にドイツで結成されたデスメタル/グラインドコアバンド、Bloodの3rd Demo Tapeのタイトルとして、1986年11月にメタル・シーンに誕生した。そのサウンドはノイズまみれのデスメタルとグラインドコアのクロスオーバーとは程遠い内容で、現在のデスコアのルーツとは言えない。同年、「DEATHCORE」というバンド名を冠したバンドがドイツで誕生。彼らは1987年にファースト・デモテープ『Revenge of the Unborn」』を発表し、1990年にNuclear Blastからデビューアルバム『Spontaneous Underground』を発表し、「デスメタル+グラインドコア=デスコア」をシーンに打ち出した。このバンドも1994年にセカンド・アルバム『Monobrow』を発表し消滅してしまった為、デスメタルとグラインドコアのクロスオーバーとしての「デスコア」は定着しなかった。
デスコアという言葉が再び使われるようになったのは、90年代後期の事である。ビートダウン・ハードコアやビーガン/ストレートエッジ・ハードコア・シーンのバンドがしばしばデスメタルグルーヴを取り入れたサウンドを打ち出し、デスコアという呼称で表現していた。97年にはベルギーのハードコアバンドDeformityがEP『Misanthrope』でデスメタルとビートダウン・ハードコアを見事に融合させ、翌年にはテキサス出身のデスメタル・バンド、Embodymentがアルバム『Embrace the Eternal』で現在のデスコアに最も近いスタイルを打ち出している（Embodymentはこのアルバム以降、オルタナティヴ・ロックバンドへと転身し、Solid State Recordsからセカンド・アルバム『The Narrow Scope of Things』を発表している)。
ハードコアやグラインドコアとクロスオーバーしながら、2000年までにデスコアという言葉が打ち出されるも、いまひとつ定着することはなかった。
現在のデスコアと呼ばれるジャンルのルーツは、2000年代から始まる。Animosityが2001年にデモテープ『Hellraiser』を発表。当時10代だった若いメンバーが鳴らす「デスメタル+メタルコア」のピュアブレンド・サウンドは、ヘヴィなブレイクダウンとピッキング・ハーモニクスを多用したカオティック/マスコア要素が印象的なスタイルで、大きな話題となった。翌年にはビートダウン・ハードコアを取り入れたスタイルのThe Acacia Strain、ブルータル・デスメタル出身メンバーが多いDespised Icon、カオティック/マスコアをブレンドしたサウンドを鳴らすThe Red Chordらが活発に動き出し、現在のデスコアと呼ばれるサウンドの礎を築き始めた。
デスコアという言葉がひとつのサブジャンルとして定着すると、アメリカを中心に彼らのフォロワーが数多く誕生。オンライン音楽ストリームサービスmyspace全盛期だったこの頃、ヨーロッパをはじめ、オーストラリアやアジア、南米大陸からも彼らのフォロワーがリアルタイムで誕生していった。
デスコア・シーンにおけるトレンドも変化していった。Suicide SilenceやWhitechapelが登場し、ビルボードチャートにもデスコア・バンドが食い込み出した2000年代中期、The Red Chordスタイルに影響を受けたカオティック・デスコアが次第にシーンで存在感を表すようになっていった。Arsonists Get All the Girls、See You Next Tuesdayがアメリカ全土を中心に巨大なファンベースを作り出すと、iwrestledabearonce、Dr.Acula、Dance Club Massacreといった、よりエクストリームなカオティック・サウンドをプレイするバンドが増殖していった。
Bring Me the Horizonを中心に、ヨーロッパのデスコア・シーンも賑わいだしていた。War from a Harlots Mouth、Eternal Lord、Annotations of an Autopsyなど、高いテクニックとセンスを持つバンドがひしめき合った。
ヨーロッパ以上に、オーストラリアでのデスコア人気は盛り上がっていった。2000年代後半にかけて、The Red Shore、Thy Art is Murder、Make Them Sufferらが誕生し、I Killed the Prom Queenが築いたオージーメタルコア・シーンを中心に大きな盛り上がりを見せた。
2005年以降、デスメタルとメタルコアのピュアブレンドとして誕生したデスコア・サウンドも変化しつつあった。Oceano、I Declare War、Emmure、Attila、Chelsea Grinなど、ブレイクダウンを基軸としたキャッチーでダンサブルなスタイルがトレンドとなっていった。ビートダウン・ハードコアと再び密接に結びつき、2010年代以降、ダウンテンポ・デスコアなる新たなスタイルも誕生した。
今も尚、様々な音楽と交わりあいながら、デスコアは進化し続けている。今やエクストリーム・メタルだけでなく、ヒップホップやEDMなど、様々なダンスミュージックからも大きなヒントを得、グルーヴやヘヴィネスをストイックに追求し続けている。
本書には、デスコアと近接するメタルコアやハードコア、デスメタルのレビューは掲載していない。デスコアであるか否かの線引きについては、バンドのオフィシャルサイトやiTunes、Last.fmといったサイトを参考にしながら行った。デスコアとその他のジャンルどちらとも言えるものに関しては出来るだけ掲載したが、他のジャンルとして語るべき作品に関しては本書にレビューを掲載していない。
様々なジャンルのエクストリーム・メタルとクロスオーバーしながら発展を続けるデスコアの歴史を掘り下げていくのは、様々なタイプのエクストリーム・メタルを聴くリスナーにとってとても有意義であり、単純に面白いと思う。多種多様なデスコアバンドの中からお気に入りを見つけ、掘り下げてみてほしい。
